Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes debilitating seizures, which can often prove to be fatal. In the old days, people often mistook it for something spiritual. However, that is not actually the case. Hippocrates, a gifted physician from ancient Greece, was the first person to advise that epilepsy is a biological disorder and has nothing to do with possession or spirits. This is when people started paying attention to finding diet as the secret to treating and managing diseases. As the years progressed, not only Hippocrates, but a variety of physicians started proposing fasting as a means of treating epilepsy. This is where the minuscule idea of Ketogenic diet took form.

In the early 20th century two doctors studied the effects of fasting on epilepsy and observed that it helped minimize its effects. Later a study conducted by a professor at Harvard showed that the effects of epilepsy subsided after 3 days of fasting. This observation led him to understand that the change in how the body was being fueled led to the change in metabolism, which was directly affecting epilepsy.

The body stores fat and while fasting, this was the source of fuel for it. Dr. Rollin Woodyatt, an endocrinologist, found that the people who fasted were fueled by acetone and beta-hydroxybutyric, which are high in fat and low in carbohydrates. This was the base for Dr. Wilder’s breakthrough into the ketogenic diet. Another renowned physician, Dr. Peterman, set out guidelines to a ketogenic diet that included a diet comprising of 1g of protein per kilo of body weight and 10g to 15g of carbohydrates. The rest of the calories are to be fulfilled by fat. This ketogenic diet is a very high fat and low carbohydrate diet. There are many variations of this diet. Here are a few reasons as to why you should be eating a keto diet.

Avoiding negative carbohydrates speed up your metabolism. This diet has shown that it helps the body utilize fat as fuel, hence burning more fat. This diet also helps maintain a healthy heart by eliminating processed food from your diet and providing healthy fat options such as Avocados, Coconut oil, olive oil, nuts and such.

The foods that feed the brain are usually high in fat content, such as walnuts and pecans. A diet high in fat helps the body circulate more ketones, which in turn leads to increased and improved brain activity.

Higher glucose levels in the blood tend to spike your blood sugar. All those carbohydrates that we consume in food are converted to glucose to fuel the body. However, the ketogenic diet fuels the body by utilizing fats once it enters Ketosis. This is a brilliant way to manage diabetes.

This automatically makes this diet all the more appealing and beneficial. The foods recommended in the ketogenic diet are high in antioxidants that will prevent free radical cells from damaging the body.

A ketogenic diet is known to give you that “glow from within”. The high-fat content keeps the skin moisturized, and improved metabolism helps the body circulate adequate oxygen internally.

Overall switching from a high carbohydrate diet to a ketogenic diet is extremely beneficial for the body.
